Best CDL Trucking Jobs and Salaries in 2026

A breakdown of the best CDL jobs by pay, lifestyle, and requirements — from OTR long-haul to local delivery, tanker, and owner-operator.

Getting your CDL opens the door to dozens of driving careers — each with different pay, home time, lifestyle, and vehicle requirements. Here's a breakdown of the top options in 2026.

Over-the-Road (OTR) Long-Haul Trucking

Salary: $55,000–$90,000+/year

OTR drivers run long routes across multiple states, sometimes spending weeks away from home. The trade-off for lower home time is higher pay and mileage bonuses. Class A CDL required; air brakes and combination endorsements essential.

Regional Trucking

Salary: $55,000–$75,000/year

Regional drivers cover a multi-state area and typically get home every week or every other week. A good balance between pay and home time. Class A CDL required.

Local/City Delivery

Salary: $45,000–$70,000/year

Local drivers are home every night. Routes cover a single metro area. Often involves physical work (loading/unloading). Class A or B depending on vehicle size.

Flatbed Trucking

Salary: $60,000–$85,000/year

Flatbed drivers haul construction materials, machinery, and oversized loads. Requires additional skills like tarping, chaining, and securing cargo. Class A CDL. Physical work but higher pay.

Tanker Driving

Salary: $65,000–$100,000+/year

Tanker drivers haul liquid or gas cargo — fuel, chemicals, food-grade liquids, or compressed gas. Requires the N (Tanker) endorsement and often the H (HazMat) endorsement. One of the highest-paying CDL jobs.

HazMat Specialist

Salary: $65,000–$95,000/year

Drivers with both HazMat and Tanker endorsements (X endorsement) command premium rates. TSA background check required. Strong demand from the chemical and petroleum industries.

Bus Driver (Transit/Coach)

Salary: $45,000–$70,000/year

Transit bus drivers work for city transportation agencies. Coach and charter bus drivers work for private companies. Class B CDL with Passenger (P) endorsement required. Strong job security and often good benefits.

Owner-Operator

Salary: $80,000–$200,000+ gross (before expenses)

Owner-operators own their truck and run independently or under a carrier's authority. Much higher earning potential but also higher risk — you pay for fuel, maintenance, insurance, and downtime. Usually requires 1–2 years of company driving experience first.

Which Job Is Right for You?

If you want the highest pay and don't mind being away from home, OTR or tanker driving offers the best earning potential. If home time matters most, go local or regional. If you want long-term career growth, owner-operator is the goal many drivers work toward.
